Documents You Will Need to Complete Your Social Security Retirement Application
The day you have been waiting for your entire adult life is almost here. Your retirement is just around the corner, but are you ready for it? You have been paying into Social Security your entire working life and now it is almost time to start collecting your payments. Do not let the payments you have worked so hard to earn get delayed in their arrival. As you begin the process to receive your Social Security retirement benefits, be sure to have the following information ready to include with your application.
Required Documentation for Your Social Security Retirement Application
It should be noted that all applications are different, and the documentation that is required may differ, depending on individual circumstances. However, most applications require applicants to provide the following documents:
- Social Security card or other proof of your Social Security number
- Original birth certificate or some other proof of your birth (note: if you do not have an original, a copy that is certified by the issuing agency is acceptable)
- Proof of U.S. citizenship if you were born in this country.
- Proof of legal alien status if you were born in another country.
- Copy of U.S. military service papers if you served before 1968, if applicable
- Copy of W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns from the previous year.
If You Do Not Have the Documents on Hand
If you are unable to produce any of the documents listed above right away, you can still apply for your retirement benefits. Simply submit the documentation you do have to get your application started. You can submit the remaining documents later when you have tracked them down.
Help to Get the Social Security Administration documents
In some instances, the Social Security Administration can help you track down some of the necessary documents. The SSA can contact your State Bureau of Vital Statistics on your behalf to verify your information. This assistance is at no cost to you.
Delaying your application for your retirement benefits can result in losing some of the benefits to which you are entitled. So, make sure you get your application in on time and include all the necessary documentation.
