How Do I Receive My Social Security Payments?

After you’ve gotten your application approved for social security, there’s still the manner of getting paid. You may have questions on what you can expect from your social security payments. Here are some of the common questions and their answers to help.

How You Can Expect Your Payments

Social Security payments are no longer allowed to be paid in a check form after a law was passed in 2013. You can either elect to receive your payments as a direct deposit into your bank account, or you can get Direct Express. Direct Express is a pre-paid card that your payment can be paid electronically rather than direct deposit. If neither of these options is optimal for you, they do give some people waivers for electronic payments, but this isn’t a given.

When You Can Expect Your Payments

If your claim was approved quickly, you will have to wait until you’ve been disabled for six months to start receiving payment. Your first social security payment will come after that period. If your claim took longer, this won’t be the case. Your social security payments will be paid on a monthly basis. These payments are paid for the previous month. So, you’ll be paid in February for January.

Getting The Owed Back Pay

If you were one of the individuals that had to wait on getting your approval paid, you will be owed back pay. This payment will be dated back to when you would have started receiving benefits six months after your disability if your application would have been approved then. One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot receive more than a year of back pay for your disability.

Some Monies May Be Monies Withheld

For some people, you will owe taxes on your social security payments. In this case, you may have some of your payments withheld to pay your taxes. There are a few other instances where some monies may be withheld. Your creditors cannot garnish your social security disability payments unless you owe money to the federal government. For instance, if you owe federal student loans, this money may be garnished for your payments.
